DOG owners in Truro who leave their pet's mess where it falls could be putting children's health at risk.
The warning comes form PCSO Emile Gabriele who has received numerous complaints about thoughtless dog owners and often comes across the mess close to children's play areas.
PCSO Gabriele said: "Dog fouling affects communities everywhere but it is becoming an increased problem in Redannick.
"It is a health hazard which can lead to serious disease caused by roundworm and young children are the most vulnerable. The worms can cause asthma, pneumonia and in some cases if they get into the eyes, blindness.
"I suspect the problem is caused by small minority who do not clean up after their pets and instead leave it on pavements and grass where child can fall in it or even pick it up."
Offenders who do not pick up their pets waste can receive an on the spot fixed penalty fine of £50 and can even be taken to court where they could face a much larger £1,000 fine and even be prosecuted.
PCSO Gabriele added: "This is a warning to people about the dangers and threats to children's health by leaving their pets mess on the ground. I would encourage residents and responsible dog owners to report those who do not clean up after their pets."
He added that he had also been speaking to Carrick district council about providing more dog waste bins and that he would also step up patrols in the worst affected areas to try and reduce the problem.
